A Better Pitch

Matt Bruback Baseball Pitcher

Every good pitcher knows sometimes you have to let’em walk. In the case of former professional baseball pitcher Matt Bruback, he actually helps them walk, and so much more. Kids that is.

As a pitcher Matt experienced difficulty gaining his “balance” after an injury. It was affecting his performance as well as his ability to move into the majors. Unbeknownst to him, in his healing and re-training he was about to make a startling discovery that would not only change his life, but also the lives of many others. Matt discovered a way to correct or improve the correlation of body awareness and function.

Initially his invention was designed with adults in mind, but Matt quickly discovered the endless advantages and benefits to children with balance issues and neurological based disorders.

Although he makes a variety of belts for all ages, his main focus is on the Miracle Belt. Matt says,

“Infants and children have developmental issues that are time sensitive. We all need to help and it just so happens these children need our help during the most important developmental years of their lives.”

The Miracle Belt helped a 10-year old child suffering from Down syndrome walk for the first time unassisted. Matt say’s

“There is nothing more inspiring or satisfying as helping a child walk for the first time.”

Drs. Frank and Lisa Lanzisera, the parents of the child said,

“We have tried many things over the years to help in our son’s development. At 10 years of age he was unable to walk unassisted. We knew the problem was his balance. After reading about the Miracle Belt™ in the newspaper, we immediately ordered one online. Our son is now walking all around the house without any help. In fact, he constantly surprises us when he just walks into the room. We’ve dreamt of this moment for ten years. So, in our mind, the Miracle Belt truly is a miracle!”

Alternative therapies for children suffering from ADHD, ADD, Autism and other central nervous system disorders are available. The problem is, most parents don’t know about them, instead they are given prescriptions by their children’s pediatricians. In today’s world, pushing pills to children is no less common than selling candy to them. Kids with disorders are being turned into pharmaceutical stews as we feed man-made chemicals into an already distressed system. Pills do not address problems, they address symptoms and too many, can be little more than toxic Band-Aids.

Latest statistics from the CDC state we live in a country where more than 48% of its citizens are taking at least one prescription drug daily. With these statistics it’s easy to see how parents can be so accepting of drugs suggested for their children. In fact, prescriptions written to treat ADHD patients alone have increased by a factor of 5 every year since 1991 according to the 2000 Congressional Testimony of DEA Deputy Director Terrance Woodworth. A whopping 80% of those prescriptions were written for America’s children. Strikingly, 85% of all the methylphenidate (the most commonly used ADHD drug) is produced and consumed here in the United States. Sadly, 1 out of every 5 children in America has been prescribed prescription drugs – the most common being asthma medications and central nervous system stimulants.

Parents need to understand there are options out there that are getting great results naturally. Few health care providers are going to recommend alternative therapies, because let’s face it; there’s no money it for them. In 2006 Americans spent 289 billion on prescription drugs. An un-healthy dose of that was spent marketing to physicians. The pharmaceutical industry is the most profitable industry in the country. They spend almost twice as much on promoting their products then on researching and developing them and they are the top financial contributors to political campaigns.

A parent who can reduce or eliminate a child’s medication will not only be helping the health of the child, but will also save money. The cost of the Miracle Belt is minimal in comparison to the cost of a single prescription. There is nothing invasive about it and there are no side effects other than improvement.

“I recommend parents question everything. Get second opinions. Always look for a natural way to balance the body” says Matt Bruback creator of the Miracle Belt.

There is no singular cure, and blanket approaches are not to the benefit of all. Parents and therapists need to look at how the nervous system is an energy field. Think of a radio where the dial is slightly off and you can barely hear the strains of a song through the static. Now turn the dial to correct the off-frequency. That’s what the Miracle Belt does. It helps “ground” the body and “center” the mind’s frequency by making a natural electrical change merely by increasing neurological feedback through weight distribution. Unlike weighted vests that can actually create a top-heavy environment and be uncomfortable for kids, the Miracle Belt is a small weighted belt that goes around the lumbar area. This is where the cauda equina is located; the bundle of nerves at the end of the spinal cord and a main hub of the nervous system’s communication path from the brain to peripheral nerves controlling movement and sensation.

Many children with sensory disorders have to move. It’s the way their nervous system’s function. Unfortunately movements are rarely fluid and most often are involuntary. Their need to be in constant motion is distracting to others and can be dangerous. Realizing that proper movement begins with body awareness Bruback designed the Miracle Belt to work with the body’s natural science allowing those wearing it a stronger neuromuscular connection with the brain. Hyper-activity is dramatically lessened by wearing it which allows for an increase in focus and concentration. In addition, wearing the belt improves body awareness increasing balance and coordination. All of this without a single pill.

A new ADHD study showed that 8 out of 10 patients showed significantly reduced symptoms (based on their scores) by wearing the belt. The effects are miraculous and often results are noticed by parents and therapists right away according to the dozens of testimonials on Matt’s website.

When I asked Matt if the Miracle Belt could help parents get their kids off of the medications he told me,

“There are a lot of parents who use the belt to wean their children off medication. Medication is a last resort in my book. I’m a strong believer in holistic means.”

Having invested everything – including his heart and soul, Matt hopes to continue to get the word out about the belts. He envisions helping more than a million children improve their quality of life as well as that of their parents. He reaches out to children’s charities and has donated nearly 500 of the Miracle Belts already. Currently he is trying to reach out to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, OR as well as the Children’s Miracle Network.

One of the connections Matt has made is with Dave Clark, Founder of the Dave Clark Foundation, and co-founder Doug Cornfield. Dave is another former baseball player whose foundation reaches out to and helps children with disabilities. As a pitcher, Dave was the only pro player to ever pitch from the mound on crutches due to polio. He also suffers from Scoliosis. Now Dave is a keynote speaker and children’s advocate. Together Matt hopes the two can help bring more awareness to each other’s organizations.

A variety of Matt’s belts – including those for adults, can be found on his website as well as through a handful of distributors. He even offers a refurbished belt program. The luxury of marketing hasn’t presented itself to this humble entrepreneur however; Matt feels the success stories by countless parents and therapists found on his site are powerful enough to get people to at least look further into his device. In addition, he continues to donate Miracle Belts when he can.

Once living his dream as a professional pitcher, I asked Matt if his dream has now changed,

“Dreams are destined to change as we grow… baseball was my first love and will always be my first love.  Baseball allowed me the opportunity to develop a tool which shares God’s love and if that isn’t a dream come true I don’t know what is!”
