What’s the Most Significant Secret I’ve Ever Kept?

Um, how about the one I’m not going to tell you?

Duh, that’s why it’s a secret! Right?

This is the question that was posed in today’s WordPress Daily Prompt. I’ve thought about this off and on all day while I’ve been working on yesterday’s “Is the Glass half Full/Empty” DP (it’s turning into an epic piece, stay tuned for posting later this afternoon).

Anyhow, back to the question at hand.

“What’s the most significant secret I’ve ever kept?”

First let me say that agreeing to keep anyone’s secret is significant in its own right. After all someone is entrusting you with something that is important to them. It doesn’t matter how insignificant you may find the information.

Second and lastly, if a secret is told it is no longer a secret so today’s DP is very hard to respond to.

I do carry secrets. Many secrets actually. In fact I am the bearer of a tremendous secret with huge implications because of a book I am writing. I have secrets that are my own, and secrets that could be yours.

I wrote about secrets late last year. Keeping a secret puts a heavy burden on the person expected to keep it. There are some secrets I’d rather not keep (but I will) and some I’d rather of never known (but I do). I have shared my own secrets and of course hope my confidant will keep my secret(s) safe too.

Maybe today’s prompt should have instead asked, “Why do we keep secrets” or “why do we share secrets“….what would you have said to that?

Secrets can be a huge burden, but what has helped me is remembering that when someone shares their secret with me, it is their’s not mine and therefor not mine to tell – somehow that has helped me loosen that desperate urge to cough up all I know to anyone who will listen!

I block my ears when someone say’s ‘I’ve got something to tell you and you can’t tell ANYONE’. I hate secrets – they’re such a burden on the soul! 😉
