Isn’t it crazy how a line of lyrics can break your heart? It’s as if the words were plucked from your head and heart, then set to music.
It’s personal. No, it is intimate and it can get you at anytime, causing feelings of sudden, intense emotion where just moments before, there was none. And, it doesn’t discriminate. I mean, music doesn’t wait for you to get all settled in with a box of Kleenex. No, it’s gonna pop you on that ride no matter where you are or how inappropriate crocodile tears might be.
A song can take you a million places [sometimes all at once] because it has the power to move you; whether by way of making you shake your groove thing or moving you to both happy and sad tears; it can also take you to the edge of despair if you let it. Sometimes I let it.
I have had a close relationship with music my entire life. It is the one constant; the one thing I have always been able to count on regardless of mood or life circumstances. I do have to admit the music that touches me the deepest is that of the brokenhearted, “lost love” genre. It’s usually rife with lyrical brilliance and “music” by any other name could sometimes be called “Heartache”.
“I watched you suffer a dull aching pain, now you decided to show me the same. No sweeping exits or off stage lines could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind…”
~ The Rolling Stones, Wild Horses
“Your heart’s a mess. You won’t admit to it. It makes no sense, but I’m desperate to connect and you, you can’t live like this…”
~ Gotye, Hearts A Mess Lyrics
“I’m out of my head, can’t wait any longer, down on my knees, I thought I was stronger…”
~ Daughtry, Crawling Back to You
“Funny how my favorite shirt smells more like you than me. Bitter traces left behind, stains no one can see.”
~ Norah Jones, In the Morning
“Still looking at the road we never drove on.”
~ Maroon 5, Sad
“So while you’re outside looking in describing what you see, remember what you’re staring at is me.”
~ Stone Sour, Through Glass
“Let them find the real you buried deep within. Let them know with all you’ve got that you are not your skin.”
~ Nikki Sixx, Skin
“Risk it all, lay it on the line. Let the skeletons fight for life. Tonight, hold on tight, as we collide.”
~ Kid Rock, Collide
There are so many songs — or just the lyrics themselves, that I could have picked from, but these were some of those favorited on my YouTube channel. If you love music as much as I do and you like to play with word, you will love my “Song Title Series” where nearly every word/phrase of the post is a real song title with it’s video link and I invite you to take a peek.
What are your favorite lyrics or just some that have somehow impacted you?
