Radio Days: Whoa Nelly (Furtado that is)

My oldest daughter is a “Leap Year” baby so, every year that wasn’t a “Leap Year”, we would celebrate her birthday on whichever weekend fell at the end of February. The year in question however was a “Leap Year” and her birthday fell on a work-day, but this wasn’t just any work day, this was also the day recording artist Nelly Furtado was coming to KINK FM, the Portland radio station I worked for at the time.

Typically I would have taken this extra special birthday of my daughter’s off. It was her 16th birthday in real years, but her 4th in “Leap Years”…also, it’s not like her real birth day came around every year. I had a great gift all planned for her. I was hosting her and 5 or so of her friends in a condo at the beach (with me chaperoning of course).

Anyhow, I like Nelly Furtado and I tried not to miss the opportunities working at the best station in the market offered. Nelly’s Like a Bird song was just out and she was doing the radio tour rounds so I settled for going in for a half-day to check it out.

I’m glad I did…

After Nelly performed in studio she — like other before and after, accommodated the staff with a “meet-and-greet”. I didn’t have a lot of time and decided I would just go ahead and leave. I was telling our receptionist, Merna, that I was leaving when Nelly overheard me and asked why.

I explained about my daughter’s birthday and the beach trip and so on.

Nelly was very cool. Not only did she autograph her new CD to my daughter, but she also wrote, “Happy Birthday Aleca” on a piece of paper and held it up for her picture to be taken with it which was then posted not only on the station website, but for a time on Nelly Furtado’s site as well.

Of course my daughter was thrilled and thought it was really cool (I loved being the cool mom).

My daughter is now a new mommy as Nelly Furtado was then. She is also almost 26-years old.

My how 10-years flies!
