Sometimes old songs can be new, just as new songs can be [or become] old. It’s all about perspective. It’s not whether you have actually heard a song before, it’s the mood of the moment in which you hear a second…or third, time.
There have been many songs where upon hearing them the first time or two, I really didn’t like them at all, but later, down the road the song would pop on and wah-lah, it was a sudden hit. Why? because it was obviously hitting on something going on in my head or life at that moment.
For this weeks Twisted Mix-Tape (hosted be Jen Kehl) the gang will be spinning tunes that were new — or new to us, in 2013.
Here are five of mine, and I hope you look at some of the bands themselves and not just the songs…
Elephant Revival – Drop
I was introduced to this band over the summer while in Colorado. I loved the little bit I heard in a car on the way to who knows where and later looked them up.
I am probably one of their biggest fans and have even ghostwritten articles on them.
Awolnation – Sail
The first time I heard this song, it was on the Voice and performed by contestant Kat Robichaud, so I must be fair and include her video along with the original.

AWOLNATION
Ane Brun – Are They Saying Goodbye
I’ve written a lot on love and loss this past year. This song nailed a few things home when I heard it randomly on YouTube.
Gotye – Hearts a Mess
When Somebody that I Used to Know came out, I liked it. I liked it even more after seeing their talent and creativity in an alternate video. I looked into a few other songs by them and realized they are totally awesome and all of their videos are trippy and have a message.
Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke (ft. T.I., Pharrell)
Call it what you will, but I call it boogie music. When it comes on, wherever I am…whatever I am doing…I have to move. I cannot sit or stand still with this song on.
What were your favorite “new” songs in 2013?

What a great list of songs. I also like Awolnation’s song ‘All I Need’ – it’s great in the headphones on the morning walk 😉

Thanks for the intro to Elephant Revival. I think I’ll love their stuff.
Goyte’s other songs are quite good and his videos are always strange and interesting!

OK LOVED Elephant Revival. Reminds me so much of what I used to listen to in the early 90s when I was following The Dead, there was so much amazing music around us all of the time.
This was a great list, for me a lot of the music I learn about is from the music “contest/reality shows” the fact is radio is Pandora, and so I learn a lot about the music I know I like, I don’t about the music that is outside my sphere. Sail was also one of those songs for me.

Yes, I have several Pandora stations set-up. Reg radio is too repetitive.
